Although not an official trailhead but rather a picnic area. Parking can be found here or at other nearby areas. This trailhead gives you access to the forest service roads South and East of Custer.
As an alternative, sometimes when school is not in session, we park at the Custer High School parking lot. Another alternative is the Forest Service parking lot.
To explore the Black Hills National Forest or ride the Mickelson Trail, Deadwood Outdoor Rentals is your perfect destination.
An old restored ranch, old buildings standing in Custer and a pair of monoliths are destinations in this area. The park is full of visual and historic features. My favorites are Mt Coolidge Fire Tower, Hazelrodt Cabin, Meeker Ranch Meeker Road Cabin and the Badger Hole cabin.
Nearby the Historic Riffle Pit Wagon Train site, in April 1876, Indians ambushed a wagon train heading for Custer. The baby Mann grave sits on the edge of one of the interior Custer State park roads. The baby died during birth on June 6th 1902 on the original Fleur de Lis Ranch. Other known graves in the Park include the Major Whitehead gravesite and the Dr. Alvin Herbert grave.
The First White woman to enter the Black Hills, arriving in Custer City, in December 1874. A monument to her is located in this area.
The Gladys Nell Mine is evidence of mining activity in the area. Mining evidence can be found at the Wild Rose Mine, and November Mine.
Built in 1887, Cold Springs school house, is one of the oldest log school buildings in South Dakota. It served as a school, community church and meeting house. It closed in 1949. If you visit, watch for the historic Cold Spring graveyard, located near.
There is some evidence here, of ghost towns in Custer State Park. Watch for the Bakerville Ghost Town, Fleur De Lis Ghost Town, Westford Ghost Town and the Gordon Stockade.
The historic Beaver Creek Bridge spans a major creek that flows into Wind Cave National Park. The bridge is 115 feet above the canyon floor and made of steel and concrete is 225 feet long. It is the bridge’s arch that makes it a photographic destination.
Custer State Park features to watch for are the Bison Viewing areas, the Custer State Park Entrance Sign, Custer State Park Visitors Center, Lover’s Leap Peak, Mount Coolidge, Prairie Dog Viewing areas, Praire Hiking Trail, and theNeedles Eye Tunnel.
