The Black Hills National Forest calls them forest service roads, but some riders call them 82′ non-width restricted trails. Many of these forest service roads are trail-like!
These are the trails the wider machines can legally use. Some of these trails are open year-round. These are the trails that often take you into the mystery and history of the Black Hills.
There are over 3,000 miles of these forest service road, 82″ non-width restricted trail-like trails. These trails are numbered on the MVUM, with three digit numbers like 201 or 201 2A.
A diverse set of trails, a diverse list of destinations and close to Hill City.

If you do not mind riding on scenic highways, follow the map South on US 16 and then North on Hwy 89.
There are a number of historic gold mines in this area. Most require off-atv hiking. However, evidence of the mines are present at the site, making for great picture taking and visual enjoyment.
The White Horse Gulch Water Crossing is a nice feature worth visiting.
Old buildings to watch for include: Tin Queen Cabin, Spring Creek Road Cabin, and the old Tin Queen Cabin.
Ghost towns with none or little evidence remaining, include; Oblivion Ghost Town, and the Oreville Ghost Town.
If you enjoy waterfalls, watch for Willow Creek Falls, and if you enjoy lakes watch for Sunday Gulch Lake and Mitchell Lake. Other natural features include Sylvan Peak and Medicine Mountain.
Historic mines in the area include: Eureka Mine, Hill City Mine, Tin Center Mine, Samelias Tin Mine and Tin Queen Mine. The Eureka Mine has an old mining road hiking trail to its location.
There are width restrictive trails in this area.
Connecting rides include: Gold Mountain Ride, Riley Hill Ride, and Tigerville Ride.
Parking for this area is at the old China Trailhead.
