The Black Hills National Forest calls them forest service roads, but some riders call them 82′ non-width restricted trails. Many of these forest service roads are trail-like!
These are the trails the wider machines can legally use. Some of these trails are open year-round. These are the trails that often take you into the mystery and history of the Black Hills.
Remote and vast in scope, is the Summit Ridge ride. There are numerous trail-like Forest Service roads. Ride where few people ride. See what few on ATVs see. Its close enough to Ditch Creek, a well used ATV area, to make a great 2nd day of riding.
You may drive on more gravel roads here, than you prefer but they take you to trail-like forest service roads with great scenery and adventure.
The most unique geological features are found at the Southern end of this ride at Sled Canyon. Although the trail is gravely, the scenery is amazing!
As you look to discover the Moon area, watch for the Rudenvale Spring, Moon Ghost Town and Preachers homestead. The Moon Ghost Town, once owned by the Forest Service is now on private land.

The Moon Fire Tower was made of wood, meaning the structure no longer exits.
The Rancher’s Grave has a sad story connected with it.
You may ride on more gravel roads here, than you prefer but they take you to trail-like forest service roads with great scenery and adventure. Trail 3534 will get your adrenaline flowing as it loops you into Wyoming and then back into South Dakota (no Wy permit required). Here you will use 4-wheel drive and appreciate your ADC. If you pass a cattle watering tank, you have missed a right turn and are now on private land. Only solution is to turn around.

Parking for the Summit Ridge Ride is best at the Antelope Springs Trailhead.
