Chasing gold, John A. Miller arrived in the Black Hills in 1876. In 1882 he purchased a ranch near Castle Creek. Situated along the cheyenne-Deadwood stage line, the ranch provided a place to exchange lathered horses and feed weary travelers.
In the 1940’s the old Miller Cabin was loaded onto wooden skids and pulled by teams of horses to its present location. Over the next thirty years the cabin remained in the Anderson family, where it hosted family gatherings until ownership was transferred to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in 1978.
