The Black Hills National Forest calls them forest service roads, but some riders call them 82′ non-width restricted trails. Many of these forest service roads are trail-like!
These are the trails the wider machines can legally use. Some of these trails are open year-round. These are the trails that often take you into the mystery and history of the Black Hills.
There are over 3,000 miles of these forest service road, 82″ non-width restricted trail-like trails. These trails are numbered on the MVUM, with three digit numbers like 201 or 201 2A.
There are no trails in the Black Hills like the trail-like forest service roads of the My Favorite Drive, Elk Mountain Drive. It is framed by the results of a 2001, 21,000 acre forest fire that took most of the trees. But the trails are still there; open all year-around. And still there, is the wide-open scenery!

You will probably drive in low some of the day, because the trails are just that technical. And, its 5662 feet to the base of the Elk Mountain Fire Tower.
The Dewey Ghost Town is found in this location.
You will ride over 25 miles one-way of road driving.
To legally access Forest Service Road 120 and/or 818, you must obtain land-owner permission.
There are no width restrictive trails on the Elk Mountain Ride.
Connecting rides include the Jasper Ride and the Richardson Ride.
Parking is available along Forest Service Road 123 and 123 1A. You could also park of Hwy 16 on 769 or at the Richardson trailhead.
